Madeline Hunter Lesson Plan Design
Madeline Hunter seemed to realize that many teachers had different learning styles, grade levels, subjects, and different backgrounds. She found that even if it is all different, there were eight elements that she thought enhanced and maximized learning. Madeline Hunter she made eight different elements in lesson planning which started two decades of teachers training.
1. Anticipatory Set
Anticipatory set is a shot activity or prompt that focuses the students attention before
the actual lesson begins.
2. Objective and Purpose
The purpose or objective of the lesson includes why students need to learn the objective, what
they will be able to do once they have met the criterion, how they will demonstrate learning as a
3. Input
The new knowledge, process or skill must be presented to the students in the most effective
manner. This could be through discovery, discussion, reading, listening, observing, etc.
4. Modeling
The teacher shows a graphic or demonstrates in a concrete way exactly what the finished product
looks like. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words.
5. Checking for Understanding
The teacher uses a variety of questioning strategies to determine and to reflect on
the pace of the lesson.
6. Guided Practice
The teacher leads the students through the steps necessary to perform the skill.
7. Independent Practice
The teacher releases students to practice on their own based on learning that has occurred during
the previous steps.
8. Closure
Closure is not necessarily an end point, but more of a final “check for understanding” used at the
end of a class period. It can also introduce what you will be learning the next day.
The parts that I might find difficult when making lesson plans is the Independent practice. This is because I mainly want to teach K -3rd grade and I really like group work. It is hard to come up with something creative and fun that students can do independently.
I believe that the anticipatory set and the closure are the most important to me at this point. I think it will be very important making sure that you grab your students attention so that they are excited about learning. I also think it is important to end that lesson plan on a good note and have the students excited about coming back and learning something new the next day.

Rylee,
ReplyDeleteI really like how you started your post with information about the format we use in class for lesson plans, I did not know it has been used for this long. I know that their are other forms but I did not know this one has been around for this long, do you know if it has been modified at all? There are some great pages that can be used for independent practice, this is the time students need to be able to work on their own so the teacher can get a better judgement on if the student understands the material or not. It will come to you as you write lesson plans do not worry! I agree the hook and closing is important to me as well. I wish you the best of luck with writing your lesson plans!

Rylee,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed how you include the history behind the Madeline Hunter lesson plan design. It is great how those eight elements can work for all teachers, no matter what their style of teaching is. It helps us understand the specific areas we need to hit on while still adding our own personal touch to the lessons.
