What is Student Engagement? Student engagement is something that we as future teachers have to really understand, and learn the importance of. Student engagement is when students are independently motivated while learning, they are working through challenges and engaging in their own understanding by thinking deeply and making connections. There are many different ways that we can promote and incorporate different engagement strategies for our students. Students who are engaged, learn at higher levels and have a profound grasp on what they are learning. These students also will retain the information that they are learning when they are engaged in the lessons. Also when students are engaged it is easier for them to then transfer their knowledge to new concepts they are learning and compare them. Assessments.... that is a word that none one likes to hear, even me as a future teacher. One of my goals as a future teacher is to not have your typical boring assessments. My goal is to have my students show me they have met my objectives for them in a fun and creative way. My unit will be a first grade science unit in which my students will be able to describe the presence of the Sun, Moon, and stars in the sky over time. My lessons will be a lot of hands on lessons and small assessments throughout the unit. I will be using a lot of models for my students to hopefully help them have a full understanding. To give you a couple examples of how my lessons will go I will briefly explain what my lesson plans will be about. Lesson #1 : Teaching my students how the earth rotates to show day and night time. Blooms Taxonomy has major categories of educational objectives. In 1948 Benjamin Bloom formulated a classification of the educational process. A group of more educational psychologist helped develop classification of different domains. Bloom also realized that over 95% of test that students answer only requires them to use the lowest level to recall the information. These levels of learning that I have mentioned below flow into Blooms Taxonomy idea and model. Cognitive Learning - is learning that is demonstrated by knowledge that is recalled and intellectual skills. Affective Learning: is learning that is demonstrated by behaviors that represent attitude, interest, and attention. Psychomotor Learning: this learning demonstrated by physical skills, coordination, dexterity, and manipulation. Below is a model that I found from fractus Learning website. Madeline Hunter seemed to realize that many teachers had different learning styles, grade levels, subjects, and different backgrounds. She found that even if it is all different, there were eight elements that she thought enhanced and maximized learning. Madeline Hunter she made eight different elements in lesson planning which started two decades of teachers training. 1. Anticipatory Set Anticipatory set is a shot activity or prompt that focuses the students attention before the actual lesson begins. 2. Today I want to talk to you about what a Unit of Instruction is, the key parts, and what I personally think I will succeed or struggle with during a Unit Instruction. A unit of instruction is like a framework of curriculum that is extended. This is because it is organized by different experiences, text, skills, knowledge, and assessments. This then allows our students to mater a repertoire of competencies meaningful. A unit is divided in to separate parts or lessons which is then broken down into skills that are more manageable. Each of the lessons are guided by what we call the objective or goal. Today I want to talk a little bit about the ABCDs of writing objectives. This is a useful method that we like to use that helps us tremendously in writing objectives. A - Audience: Who are your learner's (Who will be preforming)? B - Behavior : Describe the task or behavior using action verbs (something that is heard or observed) C - Condition: Under what conditions (aids, tools, or reference materials) D - Degree: To what degree of mastery (speed, accuracy) For fun I have done a learning objective for my Fiancé Josh! Hello, My name is Rylee Gooding I am 23 years old and have lived in Columbia, MO for about 5 years. I love Columbia and all that it has to offer. This is where I met my fiance Josh in 2016 who is a graduate from Columbia College, and we plan to stick around. We are getting married October 10, 2020 so you can find me wedding planning until then. We have a black lab named Winston, and a black cat named Zolah we love both of them so much and enjoy spending time with them.
