To Truths & A Lie - Introduction

Image
Hello, Welcome to Miss. Rylee's Educational Journey Blog! I'm super excited to have some new faces here at the blog, its been awhile. I will start with a little introduction about myself and my life, let's get started!  I grew up in a small town in Northeast Missouri near the Mark Twain Lake. As you can imagine I spent a lot of time outdoors, swimming, boating, kayaking and much more! When I moved out the day after High School graduation, I spent the summer with my sister at The Lake of The Ozark's working at a summer camp, then moved to Columbia to start a new chapter in my life...college!  After two years of living in Columbia I bumped into the man of my dreams and best friend that I get to marry this October (go away corona). We have a black lab named Winston who just turned 3 today, and loves water!! We all love to spend time outdoors wether it is going back to Mark Twain lake and boating or exploring his family farm.  Here we are still today, so close t...

Unit Plan Mini Presentations!

Image
1. What was the most difficult part of designing the unit plan for you? The hardest part for me was coming up with a fun assessment at the end of our lesson plans that assessed over everything without giving my first graders a test. 2. What is the most significant learning you had about unit design? At first I thought everything was so messy but when it was all said and done everything looked super organized and set the tone for my lesson plans. 3. What felt inauthentic to you about unit design? I felt that the unit design was pretty cut and dry, it was organized but I also felt that I was just repeating everything that was in my lesson plans already. 4. Do you feel like you would ever actually teach this unit?  Why or why not Yes, I would love to teach this unit to actual first graders! I think that it would be a very fun unit plan and my first graders would love it! I also think it may be a lot of work because one of our lessons takes us on a field trip to the...

Teach Like a Champion!

Image
I really enjoyed watching the videos that were provided on Teaching like a Champion strategies. I then started to reaches all 49 strategies of Lemov: Teach like a Champion. There were three different strategies that I picked out that I believe were really good strategies that I would personally use in my own classroom. #31 Binder Control : This is having enough respect and care for the work you put into your classroom to make a system in which you can store, organize, and recall what students are learning. I think it is so important to be creative and organized as a teacher. This will make teacher’s life easier and students’ lives less stressful. #41 Threshold: When students cross the threshold into the classroom I would want to greet them good morning, ask them about their night. At this time I would see if students have anything in their back packs for me. I would also remind them of some expectations or give them directions. This sets the tone and reinforces the first step...

Good By Lesson Plan Presentations

Tonight was the last of our lesson plan presentations, and it was kind of bitter sweet. Only three of us had to finish up tonight, and I think it went pretty great! First up was.. Abigail: I was excited about your presentation on your lesson because I love the orgon trail and I have been reading your blog post about it! I loved the ideas that you presented and the cards with all the facts on them. I love how you used so much modeling, this is so important! Great job! Kayla: Yay for Kindergarten!! I was really curious to see how you were going to do your number lesson. Of course you did great! I think Kindergarten is such a fun yet important age level to teach! Awesome job! Dakota: Great presentation, don't let us fool you I am sure we were all super nervous! You did just fine though and I think that was a really neat lesson to teach fourth grade! Measurements are super important, I always struggled with them myself. You did great! All of our presenters did a great job ove...

Give kudos

As we went through more lesson plan presentations tonight I felt super excited and proud of all us on how hard we have worked on putting these lesson plans together. I think that we have put a lot of thought and time into these babies and it is showing! Great job to everyone who had presented tonight. I'll go through each of of you though: Lindsay Holler: You're always so good at being descriptive and explaining things. I always know exactly what you are meaning and could picture your lesson plan in my head. I loved the idea of a family tree, I honestly do not remember ever doing a family tree it school. Great job! Andrew Elliott: After class I went and watched the wolf video and it made your lesson plan even more fun! I love learning about animals and ecosystems, I feel as though this would be such a fun and interactive lesson to teach. I think this lesson would give student the ability to be creative but learn so much! Nice work! Kylie Woods: I still have T- Swift in my...

Graded Lesson Plans

Tonight I was able to hear a few lesson plan presentations from my peers. This was really good to hear for two reasons. First, it made me feel more at ease about my own lesson plans that I have been working on. Second, I really enjoyed hearing my peers creativity and ideas that they will one day have within their own classroom. I believe that we all have been stressing a little bit about these presentations and lesson plans, at least I know I have. A lot of us do not have experience with lesson plans yet and this was our first real go at them, how intimidating! I think that we will all learn from this class and our lesson plan experiences as a whole. I already have learned a lot just from our presentations and blog post. I am grateful that everyone can give me feedback on what I have done well and what I could do better. All of our presenters today did an awesome job presenting their lesson plans. So, shout out to Rebecca, Debbie, Tiffany, Kris, and Samantha, you guys did great and I...

Analytic Rubric vs. Holistic Rubric

When it come to rubrics that we use in the classroom there are two different types that we are most familiar with or have been graded on in the past. Those rubrics are called Analytic and Holistic Rubrics. Heard of them? Analytic Rubric: breaks down parts of an assignment into smaller portions in which allows the scorer to itemize and define how and what aspects were provided and which either were missing or need improvement. Holistic Rubric: is a pretty general rubric, it usually have about three to five levels and a description of characteristics to describe each level. What makes this holistic rubric an holistic rubric is the way each description is lumped together. So, you ask which one is better to use for my students? Well the truth is neither one is better than the other. Each of these rubrics place a general assessment of the student but it really just depend who you are assessing and who is assessing. Example:  - There are less details in a holistic rubric which m...
